MMXII October 14, 2020: Dolphin: UTC 14 It is estimated that the global population of common dolphins is more than five million strong. On average, a dolphin with a weight of 200 kilos pounds will consume 10% of its body’s weight in fish every day. That is 20 kilos of fish every day to fuel their busy lifestyles. This means that the food needed to sustain them is in abundance; and there is still plenty of tuna, sardine and squid left over over to feed hundreds of millions if not billions of fish eaters around the world in water or on land. The fish count in the sea must be miraculous to sustain us all in our own environments.

The dolphin is a cetacean citizen of the sea. Cetaceans are a diverse group of highly intelligent mammals that live mostly in the ocean but there are fresh water cetaceans as well . Among some of the freshwater cetaceans are the manatee, and river dolphins. The common dolphin is depicted in ancient Greek and Roman art and culture, most notably in a murals painted by the Greek Minoan civilization. However, we esteemed them for much longer.

In royalty, there are crowns once made from or in the shape of dolphin heads. On one, the French royal crown, golden dolphins tie aspects of the crown together. The Daphne of France is a title named after the Dolphin, who is prized historically for their intelligence and the many lives of men, women and children they have rescued at sea. Dolphins still help to feed us by driving schools of fish into the nets of waiting men and women and no one knows how long they have been doing this.

There is still dolphin activism in the world. In one poem called “The Dolphins” by Carol Ann Duffy, the reader is engaged in a dramatic monologue written from the perspective of dolphins. This literary work tries to enumerate the emotions of a dolphins who were once free, but are now confined to an aquarium.
